Background:
In this focus area you will work with experienced Family Physicians who specialize in care for geriatric patients at the Nix Senior Health Care Center and in our department's Family Health Center. You will assess and manage patients under the supervision of one of our faculty members.

Goals:
Through interaction with geriatric patients in multiple settings students will gain basic knowledge of the clinical 'geriatrics syndromes' and develop the skills to perform geriatric assessment.

Teaching & Learning Activities:
1. Nix Senior Health Care Center: geriatrics clinics patients have such complex medical and social issues that students are only expectred to interview, work up and present one patient per half day. Students will work alone or in pairs with faculty or fellows.

2. Nix Inpatient Service: geriatric patients at the Nix Medical Center are manged by the faculty and fellows. A unique experience in a private practice environment. Students will work under the direction of the faculty.

3. South Module Wednesday Geriatrics Clinic: studens will assist the geriatric physicians in the Family Health Center-Downtown's South Module clinic on Wednesday afternoons. A variety of complex outpatient geriatric patients will be seen. Students will learn to use the clinic's electronic medical record.

Learning Resources:
Student orientation to the GERI clinic: http://geriatrics.uthscsa.edu
Click on the "Students" link. Under "third year students", you will find clinic and rotational materials. A tutorial on the geriatrics instruments is available under the instruments section. **STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE REVIEWED THESE PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE ROTATION.

Expectations:

1. Be on time.
Clinic start times are:
NIX Senior Health Center: 8:00AM, 1:00PM
NIX Hospital Rounds: 8:00AM
South Module Wednesday Geriatrics Clinic: 1:00PM

2. Dress Professionally
All students must wear a white coat and name tag. Men must wear a dress shirt and tie. Women must wear a blouse and pants or skirt of an appropriate length, must be able to pass the "diabetic foot test". No scrubs, shorts, or open-toed shoes are allowe in any of the clinics. Geriatric clinic patients tend to hold traditional views and expect their physicians to dress and act professionally and conservatively. Please do so out of courtesy to these older patients.

Evaluation:
In order to be eligible for an "Honors" evaluation a student must, at least, have:

1. Reviewed the instruments material prior to the start of the rotation.
2. Shown up on time and dressed approximately 100% of the time.
3. Completed all patient problem lists of the patients they saw in a timely fashion.
4. Received an honors evaluation (top 20% of all students) from the NIX Senior Health Center staff that they work with.
