Abstract:

The relationship between industry and clinicians continues to evolve; the rapid pace is driven by the need to avoid any conflict of interest between the two entities.  Several well publicized examples of unethical behavior involving industry and medical researchers has brought national attention to the issue of real or perceived conflicts of interest and how these can compromise the integrity and reliability of medical research.  The University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio created a new policy which went into effect January 1, 2008 that provides detailed guidance for UTHSCSA clinicians regarding how they interact with industry in their clinical, surgical and research activities.

This presentation meets the Texas Medical Board criteria for formal continuing medical education involving the study of medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.

Objectives:

1.) List the three categories of criteria that define autism in the DSM-IV
2.) Define joint attention and describe why it is so important in recognizing children with autism.
3.) Describe the AAP’s guidelines for screening and surveillance for ASD’s
4.) List the three actions that should be taken when an ASD is suspected in a young child.
5.) List three common management challenges particular to ASDs.

Abstract: In November, 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published 3 documents to help clinicians recognize and care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).  ASDs are not rare, thus the AAP is recommending ongoing surveillance and two standardized screenings of all children at the 18 and 24 month health visits as well as when parents express concerns about ASDs and/or language.   New evidence supports aggressive screening since early intervention can dramatically improve outcomes.  Children suspected of ASD should be immediately and simultaneously referred to an early intervention program (a definitive diagnosis is not necessary to qualify for services), audiology and a clinical team with expertise in diagnosing ASDs.
