Community Medicine
Central to our mission is the importance of the family and community context of patient care. Our program places residents in a wide range of clinical settings all across San Antonio - with special emphasis on serving those areas that are underserved. In addition, all residents received special training and skill development in core competencies of community medicine.
This curricular area is schedule both in longitudinal and block experiences during the three years of residency. Additional elective time is available for any resident interested in further pursuit of special training in this area. Currently, the program dedicates significant portions of time from individual faculty to nurture the residents' knowledge and skill in community medicine. And, like the research projects, protected time in the curriculum can be arranged for residents choosing to complete special projects in community medicine.
In the block rotations, residents complete activities designed to familiarized them with community resources and agencies in order to better serve the special needs of an underserved or "at risk" population. Additionally, residents gain experience in community settings such as school health centers, United Way agencies and others. At various times during the year, our faculty and residents serve in the community in health fairs and other health promotion activities.
