Health Center -DT

The Family Health Center (FHC) is located at the University Health Center-Downtown. It serves as the focal point for the education of the residents during their training and it is the venue for their continuity practice. Unlike many programs, first year residents have 2-4 half day sessions in the FHC per week. This allows them to begin to build their continuity practice and to immediately become key members of the medical practice.

The Family Health Center is central, but hospitals also serve as important training sites for our residents. University Hospital is the main hospital for our residency. It is a 530 bed university teaching hospital, the major referral center for South Texas. University Hospital is the primary training site for many specialties in association with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Our Geriatric Inpatient rotation is done at the NIX hospital in downtown San Antonio.

As acute care hospitalization rates fall, it becomes important for family medicine physicians to develop skills in care of patients in sub-acute care and nursing home settings. Our residents, under the supervision of family medicine faculty, care for people in these settings - both in a block rotation and longitudinally through all three years of residency.

As the New Model of Care evolves, new practice settings are increasingly important. Our residents have the opportunity to care for patients in such varied settings as public health department clinics, juvenile detention centers, skilled nursing facilities, nursing homes and private practices.
